The Wolf You Feed

“One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people.

He said, “My son, the battle is between two “wolves” inside us all.

One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.

The other is good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.”

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: “Which wolf wins?”

The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”

This story of the Cherokee Indian resonates with many of us. God gave us the gift of free will, so that we could make our own choices. Galatians 6:7-8 tells us “For whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.” Like the parable of the wolves, God gave us the free will to choose which wolf we would feed. Ultimately, he wants us to feed the lighter wolf—the wolf of joy, the wolf of peace, of love, of kindness, of truth and compassion and of faith. Feeding this wolf requires patience.

It requires self reflection. It is a practice of which we must constantly be mindful. Feeding the darker wolf who lives within us is far easier. This darker wolf represents sin. The wolf of anger, of ego, of self-pity and arrogance, of resentment and false pride—that proverbial wolf is far easier for many of us to feed. The key is being mindful of the balance between the two and making a conscious CHOICE each day to feed the right one. Which wolf will you feed today? Be Well.

The Glass

Scientifically, we all share one thing in common, and that is that we are made up of 70% water. It’s a wonder we aren’t all floating blobs, suspended as if in space—science truly is amazing! I saw a statement the other day and I laughed: “If you like water, then, well, you’ll already like 70% of me.” The saying was cute after a rather challenging day, and it made me smile. But then it got me thinking about the relationships we form with others and how even water can become unsafe for consumption.

So, for just a minute I’d like for you to think of yourself as a clean glass of water filled a little over 2/3 of the way. What does it look like? Is your water clear and fresh? Or is it cloudy and contaminated? Is its temperature so hot or cold that others would need gloves or a pot holder to touch you? Is it covered, or will it spill its contents if tipped over. Your glass. Does it have a hole? Is it leaking? Or is it impenetrable?

Now that you’ve imagined yourself as a glass I want you to apply it to your life and the people with whom you surround yourself. Are your actions and thoughts clear? Or are they clouded with judgement and negativity? Do you surround yourself with people who remain calm when things go awry, as they often do, and do you emit the same energy? Or, do you get so heated or cold that you are become unapproachable to others. The people in your circle whom you trust—when you need them most are they too hot or cold to provide you the anchor you need to keep from floating out to sea? Are the people in your life glass fillers, who lift you and inspire you and make you want to be the best version of yourself, or do they poke holes and drain you of the very essence of you?

In life, we all start with the same glass of water, filled about 70% of the way. We have a choice to surround ourselves with people who make us feel clean, who lift us and make us better, or we can choose to surround ourselves with those who cloud our thoughts and drain us of our joy. We sometimes forget that the choice is ours. I’m here to remind you (and myself!) the choice is yours.

Yes, it is true—we are alike. We’re each 70% water. Im choosing to surround myself with those who keep my glass clear and fill me up when my stores become depleted. I hope you will join me in being a glass filler. Stay hydrated, my friends.

Refuge

I’ve always been fascinated by lighthouses. One of our family pets, Bodie, was even named after one. Lighthouses are built to withstand the repeated force of high forced winds, situated along the rocky shores, on the coasts of busy harbors, or over dangerous underlying reefs. Through dangerous storms that wash others out to sea, lighthouses remain standing, offering beacons of hope to those lost at sea and seeking refuge. The beam of concentrated light projected out from the lighthouse achieves it’s effect through the use of special lenses. This highly increased intensity allows the beam of light to travel a very long distance to reach distressed ships miles away.

Thinking figuratively about your own inner light, do you project hope for others? Are you a refuge like the lighthouse, a beacon of hope as others seek safety from their personal storms, or are you the bigger storm, the surge that tries to pull the lighthouse down with you? When others are lost, do you offer them light? Mehmet Murat Ildan once wrote that “a lighthouse is not interested in who gets its light! It just gives it without thinking! Giving light is its nature!” Are you a light giver?

I’d like to think that at certain times in our lives we are both. Sometimes in our lives we are the storm. Of course we don’t mean to be, but life can feel like one wave after the other and we find ourselves lost in our own personal storm, seeking to preserve ourselves by grasping on to anything we can around us. Our attempts to seek refuge literally drown those around us who are trying to help. At other times, we are the light, reaching out to those in despair and offering a path to safety.

Just like the waves ebb and flow, so to do our roles. Our personal scars become lighthouses for others who are headed toward the same dangers we once navigated. Believe me, I know it is easier to say “be the light!” when you yourself aren’t drowning. If you can be the light and illuminate yourself for others, then be the light; but, if you’re lost at sea with waves of doubt and worry around you, just know the light of hope always shines, you may just have to swim a little to find it.

Becoming the Light

Be the Light…

I’ve always lived by the motto that our duty in life is to be someone else’s light and to lift them up. I think that’s why I love this quote by Whoopi Goldberg so much: “We’re here for a reason. I believe a bit of the reason is to throw little torches out to lead people through the dark.” When I first discovered Emily Saige, I was immediately drawn to their mission statement to build a community “on the firm foundation of integrity, authenticity and sisterhood.” In a world that can be cruel. In a world that can get its kicks off of tearing others down, it has been so refreshing already to discover a company that builds women UP, offering them light, a torch if you will, from where there was darkness. To learn more, message me and I’ll hop on a no obligation call WITH you. We’re in this TOGETHER.
