The Wolf You Feed

“One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people.

He said, “My son, the battle is between two “wolves” inside us all.

One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.

The other is good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.”

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: “Which wolf wins?”

The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”

This story of the Cherokee Indian resonates with many of us. God gave us the gift of free will, so that we could make our own choices. Galatians 6:7-8 tells us “For whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.” Like the parable of the wolves, God gave us the free will to choose which wolf we would feed. Ultimately, he wants us to feed the lighter wolf—the wolf of joy, the wolf of peace, of love, of kindness, of truth and compassion and of faith. Feeding this wolf requires patience.

It requires self reflection. It is a practice of which we must constantly be mindful. Feeding the darker wolf who lives within us is far easier. This darker wolf represents sin. The wolf of anger, of ego, of self-pity and arrogance, of resentment and false pride—that proverbial wolf is far easier for many of us to feed. The key is being mindful of the balance between the two and making a conscious CHOICE each day to feed the right one. Which wolf will you feed today? Be Well.

The Glass

Scientifically, we all share one thing in common, and that is that we are made up of 70% water. It’s a wonder we aren’t all floating blobs, suspended as if in space—science truly is amazing! I saw a statement the other day and I laughed: “If you like water, then, well, you’ll already like 70% of me.” The saying was cute after a rather challenging day, and it made me smile. But then it got me thinking about the relationships we form with others and how even water can become unsafe for consumption.

So, for just a minute I’d like for you to think of yourself as a clean glass of water filled a little over 2/3 of the way. What does it look like? Is your water clear and fresh? Or is it cloudy and contaminated? Is its temperature so hot or cold that others would need gloves or a pot holder to touch you? Is it covered, or will it spill its contents if tipped over. Your glass. Does it have a hole? Is it leaking? Or is it impenetrable?

Now that you’ve imagined yourself as a glass I want you to apply it to your life and the people with whom you surround yourself. Are your actions and thoughts clear? Or are they clouded with judgement and negativity? Do you surround yourself with people who remain calm when things go awry, as they often do, and do you emit the same energy? Or, do you get so heated or cold that you are become unapproachable to others. The people in your circle whom you trust—when you need them most are they too hot or cold to provide you the anchor you need to keep from floating out to sea? Are the people in your life glass fillers, who lift you and inspire you and make you want to be the best version of yourself, or do they poke holes and drain you of the very essence of you?

In life, we all start with the same glass of water, filled about 70% of the way. We have a choice to surround ourselves with people who make us feel clean, who lift us and make us better, or we can choose to surround ourselves with those who cloud our thoughts and drain us of our joy. We sometimes forget that the choice is ours. I’m here to remind you (and myself!) the choice is yours.

Yes, it is true—we are alike. We’re each 70% water. Im choosing to surround myself with those who keep my glass clear and fill me up when my stores become depleted. I hope you will join me in being a glass filler. Stay hydrated, my friends.

The kids started school this week and while the time usually means a time of restructuring and established routines, this year’s reality with COVID has us all a bit more exhausted and off balance, as they are here at home and learning virtually. Relief

While I don’t often write about the chronic pain associated with my connective tissue disorder, Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, those who know me know that it is a daily struggle to put on a smile and act like the pain isn’t there. I mask it well, sometimes too well, and others see me as “normal.” In truth, my body aches all over, 365 days a year. That’s my normal. I tire easily and my joints dislocate or sublex at the most inopportune times. When I need relief, I need it yesterday.

When I try to explain my pain to others I liken it to a REALLY good workout, the kind where you have trouble sitting on the toilet the next day to go to the bathroom because your muscles are so sore, so badly you contemplate just how important it is that your relieve yourself or just hold it. For eternity. You know that pain! My pain feels like that every day, but I don’t have the satisfaction of knowing my muscles will be stronger as a result of my hard work. The pain felt after a workout, or in my case as a result of a chronic disorder, triggers an anti-inflammatory response in our body. The response in turn triggers a process of tissue regeneration intended to heal our bodies and make them stronger.

Emily Saige proudly presents Relief to address our aches and discomfort. Taken once or twice per day, RELIEF is offered in a one ounce, 30ml bottle. In addition to 1,025 mg of organic CBD, this THC free tincture includes powerful terpenes known for their anti-inflammatory properties.

Relief. For aches and discomfort.

Why Delta 3 Carene?

Extracted from Cedar, which is considered the most sacred tree in Native American beliefs as a symbol of strength, wisdom, and abundance. As an oil it is used in holistic remedies for its anti-inflammatory properties to relieve joint and muscle pain and for its soothing and calming effect on the mind.

Why Eucalyptol?

Sourced from eucalyptus plants, it was first used by the Aborigines in Australia to relieve pain and reduce inflammation who also used its oils topically on the skin to reduce muscle pain, soreness, and swelling.

Why Humulene?

Found in ginseng and ginger, Humulene is used in holistic remedies as an effective anti-inflammatory and appetite suppressant. Used in Asia for thousands of years, ginseng is used by modern Western herbalists to gently stimulate and strengthen the central nervous system for fighting fatigue, physical exertion, weakened of mind and body and prolonged emotional stress.

The Best of Us

When an airplane is crashing and the oxygen masks are deployed from the overhead compartments, passengers are instructed to first administer the oxygen mask to themselves before assisting loved ones around them.

Of all the titles we wear, the role of caretaker we take most seriously. So it’s no wonder that the airlines’ directive goes against our reasoning. Our instinct tell us to instead save our loved ones first and then tend to our own needs. Whether caring for children, a spouse, or an elderly relative, we generally make great self sacrifices with the mindset that our loved ones will need the oxygen first, and we are stronger and can survive longer without it. We sacrifice our wellbeing because we believe it helps them.

In our attempt to protect those around us, we ironically do our loved ones AND ourselves a disservice when we help them first. It’s not selfish to put the mask on first. It is self preservation. If we can’t be at our best, the loved ones around us are left with our second best. Given their reliance on us to provide for them and protect them, our second best means that they suffer, too.

Sometimes being the hero means putting on the oxygen mask first. In terms of self care, this means allowing time for yourself when you feel overwhelmed, when you feel as if your flight is crashing. Practice mindfulness, read a book , take a walk, take a hot steaming shower or bath, sip a cup of coffee, walk aimlessly through Target with no one around you. Allow yourself silence. Allow yourself to breathe. Put the oxygen mask on yourself. Self care is giving the world the best of you instead of what’s left of you.

Calm

Emily Saige products launch next month, and I am so excited to share this health, wellness, and beauty line with you. How do you address everyday stresses and worries? Do you work out? Run or Walk? Or are you one to grab a quick breakfast with friends or drinks after work to “blow off” some steam? Do you meditate or practice yoga? These methods are all wonderful for alleviating stress, but they don’t always work to relieve our stress and worry. Let’s face it—life, 2020 especially, has had a way of creating a lot of worry lately! We’re out of our routines and our digestive health and even our hair health are paying for it!

Emily Saige created Calm to help address some of the common causes of stress and known ingredients believed to fight off stress and worry.

Limomene

For over 5,000 years, holistic healers in villages along the banks of the Indus and Ganges rivers of South Asia, have been adding crushed peel from lemons and limes, where Limonene is concentrated (not in the juice of these fruits) to their folk medicines for stress relief, coping with feelings of sadness and to help reach an elevated mood. Limonene is a complementary ingredient to Emily Saige’s Calm.

Citral

Citral is extracted from the leaves and stalks of the lemongrass plant, a native of India and Thailand. Lemongrass oil has a powerful citrus scent and is one of the most popular oils in aromatherapy to help relieve stress and anxiety. Citral has a strong lemon (citrus) odor and has strong antimicrobial qualities. It’s pheromonal effects may also help to ward off pesky bugs and insects. Citral’s long history of naturally helping to relieve stress and anxiety make it a welcome ingredient in Calm.

Linalool (lə-ˈna-lə-ˌwȯl | Noun.)

Linalool, often found in the form of lavender, giving it its lovely aromatic smell and is used widely in traditional folk medicines across all cultures for its natural calming properties. The linalool terpene is known for its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, sedative, and stress-relieving properties. In some studies, Lavender has been shown to even affect human EEG patterns, decreasing anxiety and bringing out a better mood!

Directions for Use

When taking calm, shake well before each use. Sublingual placement is the fastest way for the CBD to absorb into your system. Emily Saige recommends dosing the drops under your tongue and waiting 30 seconds before ingesting your dose. Calm is indicated for beginning doses of .50ml and May he increased to 1.0ml. Calm may be taken in the morning with or without a meal and again an hour before dinner or bedtime to promote a second of peace and calm.

Storage and Safety

Calm should be kept out of the reach of young children and stored in a cool, dry dark location, away from direct sunlight, heat and humidity. The product should only be used if sealed when purchased. As with any herbal product, pregnant or nursing women and those with a suspected medical condition, or are taking medication should not take Calm before speaking with their practitioner.

Refuge

I’ve always been fascinated by lighthouses. One of our family pets, Bodie, was even named after one. Lighthouses are built to withstand the repeated force of high forced winds, situated along the rocky shores, on the coasts of busy harbors, or over dangerous underlying reefs. Through dangerous storms that wash others out to sea, lighthouses remain standing, offering beacons of hope to those lost at sea and seeking refuge. The beam of concentrated light projected out from the lighthouse achieves it’s effect through the use of special lenses. This highly increased intensity allows the beam of light to travel a very long distance to reach distressed ships miles away.

Thinking figuratively about your own inner light, do you project hope for others? Are you a refuge like the lighthouse, a beacon of hope as others seek safety from their personal storms, or are you the bigger storm, the surge that tries to pull the lighthouse down with you? When others are lost, do you offer them light? Mehmet Murat Ildan once wrote that “a lighthouse is not interested in who gets its light! It just gives it without thinking! Giving light is its nature!” Are you a light giver?

I’d like to think that at certain times in our lives we are both. Sometimes in our lives we are the storm. Of course we don’t mean to be, but life can feel like one wave after the other and we find ourselves lost in our own personal storm, seeking to preserve ourselves by grasping on to anything we can around us. Our attempts to seek refuge literally drown those around us who are trying to help. At other times, we are the light, reaching out to those in despair and offering a path to safety.

Just like the waves ebb and flow, so to do our roles. Our personal scars become lighthouses for others who are headed toward the same dangers we once navigated. Believe me, I know it is easier to say “be the light!” when you yourself aren’t drowning. If you can be the light and illuminate yourself for others, then be the light; but, if you’re lost at sea with waves of doubt and worry around you, just know the light of hope always shines, you may just have to swim a little to find it.

Lavender Love

When planning our landscape for our home, I insisted on planting lavender. Having visited a local lavender farm, I just knew I wanted those entering my home to immediately experience the calming effect of this beautiful flower.

The oils extracted from this miracle plant are believed to have antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, helping to heal ailments from bug bites to burns when applied topically. Lavender also may help to medical conditions like anxiety, insomnia and even depression.

Some of my favorite lavender infused treats include lavender scones, lavender honey, and these delectable little lavender cloud cookies made by a talented local baking artist, @irissweetside. While @carousel_farm_lavender, has since closed and turned into a private celebrity home, I like to think that I’ve carried a small part of it home with me for my personal enjoyment.

Starting Fresh

If you’ve ever been blessed to hold a newborn baby in your arms, you’ll immediately remember the stillness of the world as is seemingly pauses so that you can appreciate the precious miracle of life. Babies, sleeping newborn babies especially, have a way of silencing the noise around us. They remind us to breathe. To relax. To dream of a future with limitless possibility. As Emily Saige prepares to launch, we, too, are going through our own birth. It’s exciting. It’s precious. It’s new. And, like a newborn baby about to make its mark on the world, we, too, have big dreams. I can’t wait to share it with you.

Becoming the Light

Be the Light…

I’ve always lived by the motto that our duty in life is to be someone else’s light and to lift them up. I think that’s why I love this quote by Whoopi Goldberg so much: “We’re here for a reason. I believe a bit of the reason is to throw little torches out to lead people through the dark.” When I first discovered Emily Saige, I was immediately drawn to their mission statement to build a community “on the firm foundation of integrity, authenticity and sisterhood.” In a world that can be cruel. In a world that can get its kicks off of tearing others down, it has been so refreshing already to discover a company that builds women UP, offering them light, a torch if you will, from where there was darkness. To learn more, message me and I’ll hop on a no obligation call WITH you. We’re in this TOGETHER.
